Herbalist to King Charles I, John Parkinson was a master apothecary. His Theatrum Botanicum, published in 1640, ran to 1,788 large pages. In this editor’s selection, the authors have printed Parkinson’s lively description of each plant’s ‘vertues’ or healing properties, adding their own modern commentary on his almost-forgotten herbal recipes.
